On the night of August 1 and 2, the Warsaw residents spontaneously support the military act by starting to erect barricades and dig communication trenches. The fundamentals of a future supply base for insurgents are being formed.

In the morning the troops commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Grzymała engage in a bloody skirmish with the Germans near the village of Pęcice while retreating from Ochota to the Chojnów Forest. 31 insurgents lose their lives in the battle, while 60 others are taken captive and executed by the Germans.

At 9.00 am a radio station situated in the Kamler factory in Wola at the corner of Okopowa and Dzielna Streets starts to operate. The Home Army Headquarters sends a series of telegrams to London, reporting on the outbreak of the Uprising and heavy fights. The Command requests air support.

In Wola the insurgents put up effective resistance against German tank attacks. The "Radosław" troops capture two tanks of Panther type.
The "Miotła" ("Broom") battalion takes over the Tobacco Monopoly factory at 64 Dzielna Street.

In Śródmieście the partisans capture a Jagdpanzer 38 "Hetzer" tank destroyer, renamed by them as "Chwat" ("Daredevil").

Mokotów - after heavy fights, the "Baszta" ("Bastille") soldiers take control over a school located on Woronicza Street.

Since dawn, heavy fights are taking place over the airport in Bielany, attacked by the troops of the "Kampinos" group led by Captain "Szymon" (Józef Krzyczkowski) and the soldiers under the command of Lieutenant "Dolina" ("Valley") (Adolf Pilch). German fire superiority makes it impossible for the insurgents to take control over the airport. After a few hours of fights, the "Kampinos" group is forced to pull back to the Kampinos Forest.

The Home Army troops in the Old City, supported by the "Pełka" unit composed of the House employees, capture in a daring attack the State Securities Printing House complex at 1 Sanguszki Street, threatening the Old Town from the north.

OAttacks on enemy positions are on since early morning. The insurgents capture a prison at 7 Daniłowiczowska Street. The Germans are driven out from the "Astoria" hotel on Chmielna Street and from the telephone exchange building on Tłomackie Street. After four attempts, the "Kiliński" battalion finally secures a major German strongpoint - the Main Post Office at 10 Napoleon Street and the Arbeitsamt building on Małachowski Square.

The 8th Home Army Group under the command of Captain Cyprian Odorkiewicz "Krybar" and the Polish Socialist Party unit headed by Stanisław Skibniewski "Cubryna" made up of the power station employees take control over the Warsaw Power Plant in Powiśle.

In Czerniaków, the insurgents capture the building of the Social Insurance Institution.

The scattered insurgent troops from Okęcie and Mokotów and approximately 300 soldiers from Ochota are pulling back to the Chojnów Forest.

The Germans commit an act of genocide. When advancing on the Polish positions, they are driving civilians in front of their troops, using them as a human shield. They also execute any injured insurgents they encounter.
At the prison on Rakowiecka Street, the Germans murder around 600 prisoners; over 250 inmates manage to escape.
In the Jesuit Monastery on Rakowiecka Street, the Germans kill 35 priests and nuns.
