The Germans launch a decisive strike on Powiśle. The attack is carried out from multiple directions.
The defenders are not able to repel such a massive enemy assault. They decide to pull back from Powiśle. Near the evening the area is overrun by Germans and falls under their control.
The bombardments bring death to the insurgents and cause heavy losses. Many victims die under the debris of the hospital located on Konopczyńskiego Street, others are burnt alive in the hospitals at 3/5 and 10 Pierackiego Street (today the Foksal Gallery).
The building of the Music Conservatory on Okólnik Street and the Staniewski Brothers Circus on Ordynacka Street both turn into ruins, burying several dozen people under the rubble.
The civilians are thrown out of their homes and driven to the assemble point on Browarna Street, and hence further to the Wola district.
Large numbers of civilians escape to Śródmieście, behind the line of New World Street.

On the night of September 5 and 6, the insurgents continue to fight back the enemy in the charred ruins of St. Lazarus Hospital on Książęca Street and in the buildings on the escarpment. Their purpose is to secure the passage to Czerniaków.

General Leopold Okulicki "Kobra" ("Cobra") is appointed as Acting Chief of Staff of the Home Army Main Headquarters.

Major Wacław Kuliszewski "Asesor" ("Adviser"), the Chief of Section I of the Home Army Headquarters of the District of Warsaw, is killed.

The Germans drop leaflets ordering the civil population to leave Warsaw on 7 and 8 September.

Two journals "Barykada" ("The Barricade") and "Warszawa Walczy" ("Warsaw is Fighting") merge into one, from now on published under the common title of "Barykada. Warszawa Walczy" ("The Barricade. Warsaw is Fighting").

          The Red Army captures Ostrołęka.
